Heritage & Culture

The area around The Heronry is steeped in history, heritage & culture just waiting for you to discover. Visit museums and information centres like the National Trust Visitor Centre in Glencoe, whisky distilleries and castles, gardens and monuments.

Just a short walk from The Heronry, you'll find a monument to 'James of the Glens' just above The Ballachulish Bridge where James Stewart was hung on 8th November 1752 for his part in the Appin Murder immortalised in Robert Louis Stevenson's novel "Kidnapped".

Whether you're looking for a lovely view with your coffee & cake or an award-winning romantic dinner, you are spoilt for choice in Glencoe, Loch Leven and the wider area.

The West Coast of Scotland is famed for its produce with the jewel in its crown being its seafood and we are very lucky to have both The Holly Tree Hotel & Seafood Restaurant and the Loch Leven Seafood Cafe on our doorstep (open seasonally).

Its not all about seafood though, you can enjoy a whole host of cuisines for sit down meals through to takeaway.

If you've time to explore, then why not base yourself here and go that little bit further. From your base at Ballachulish, the Islands of Mull, Iona and Skye are assessible within a day trip. Loch Ness and the Road the the Isles are also very popular day trips, including an optional trip on the Jacobite Steam Train, aka The Hogwarts Express!
